Saliva and Oral Secretion Management

Some adults have trouble managing saliva, whether there is too much, it is thick and hard to clear, or the mouth is very dry. These problems can affect comfort, speech, swallowing and confidence. Speech To You helps adults across Melbourne manage oral secretions and keep up good oral hygiene, including at home.

Common saliva difficulties

  • Excess saliva or drooling: often linked to reduced swallowing frequency or lip closure
  • Thick saliva: can be hard to clear and may affect breathing comfort and swallowing
  • Dry mouth: can make speaking, eating and swallowing tablets uncomfortable

How a speech pathologist can help

We assess what is causing the difficulty and recommend practical strategies, which may include positioning, swallowing reminders, oral care routines and suitable products. We work closely with the person's doctor and care team, as some options need medical input.

Oral hygiene

Good oral care matters for comfort and health, particularly for people with swallowing difficulties. We help families and support workers set up oral care routines that are safe and realistic. See also swallowing and mealtime support.

Funding

We support people aged 15 and over who are funded through the NDIS or My Aged Care (Support at Home). [to confirm: NDIS plan types accepted, and whether private clients are seen]
