A speech pathologist can assess how safely someone swallows food, drinks and medication, then recommend practical changes that make mealtimes safer and more comfortable. At Speech To You we provide swallowing assessments, mealtime management plans and videofluoroscopy (swallow x-ray) assessments for adults across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, including in the person's own home.
A swallowing assessment looks at how a person manages different foods and drinks. The speech pathologist watches a meal or snack, asks about any coughing, choking or chest infections, and looks at posture, timing and the textures being eaten. The aim is to understand what is happening and what would help.
A mealtime management plan sets out how a person should eat and drink safely: the food textures and drink thicknesses that suit them, how to position them, what equipment helps and what support workers should watch for. Our plans use the IDDSI framework, the international standard for describing food textures and drink thickness, so everyone supporting the person uses the same language. We also provide training for families and support workers so the plan works day to day.
Sometimes a closer look is needed. A videofluoroscopy is a moving x-ray of the swallow that shows what happens inside the mouth and throat. Our team includes a clinician experienced in videofluoroscopy assessments, who can explain when one may be useful.
Swallowing and oral health go together. We also help with excess, thick or dry saliva and with oral hygiene routines. See saliva and oral care.
We support people aged 15 and over who are funded through the NDIS or My Aged Care (Support at Home). [to confirm: NDIS plan types accepted, and whether private clients are seen]
